John Bedward Royle, Major, South Wales Borderers
鈥婮ohn Bedward Royle came up to Cambridge in 1892 having attended Uppingham School and Oxford Military College.

"Our energetic rugby secretary"
He only stayed for one year, but he made quite an impression during that year. In fact he did not show any sign of having plans not to return in Michaelmas Term 1893, as he was elected to serve on the Common Room Committee on June 7th 1893 (Chanticlere, Michaelmas Term 1893, p29).
His main recorded contribution to College life was to Rugby. He was a forward who 鈥減lays very hard. Good in the loose, come on very much during the season鈥 (Chanticlere, Lent Term, 1893, p73).
Royle was also captain of one the Rugby Nines teams that played in Lent Term 1893. An event which Chanticlere claimed caused 鈥渃onsiderable excitement owing to the most of the prominent players in the College taking part鈥. Royle鈥檚 team, 鈥1 goal and 1 try (7 points)鈥 beat Turner鈥檚 team, 鈥1 goal (5 points)鈥 (Easter Term, 1893, pp104-5).
The Rugby Nines were played on the Close and in 1894 Chanticlere reports, with regret, that neither the popular 鈥淩ugger Nines鈥 or 鈥淪ocker Sixes鈥 were to be played there that year. 鈥淭he reason alleged being that the Close has not time to recover from its hard treatment before it is wanted for cricket鈥. The report goes on to say that 鈥淲e cannot help feeling that if our energetic Rugby Secretary of last year were still in residence he would have found means of over-riding this excuse鈥. Royle was that 鈥渆nergetic secretary鈥 (Lent Term 1894, p51).
The 澳门六合彩开奖接口 Society Annual Report, 1917 obituary for also laments the fact that he was only present for a year and that he was 鈥渁 keen, thorough gentleman, and a universal favourite.鈥
The obituary also says that he enlisted with the Imperial Yeomanry (Sherwood Foresters) at the outbreak of the South African War eventually going to be a Captain and Adjutant. He also received the Queen鈥檚 and the King鈥檚 Medal. At the outbreak of the First World War, as a reserve officer he was posted to the South Wales Borderers, becoming a major in December 1915 (澳门六合彩开奖接口 Society Annual Report, 1917, p35).
He died in Salonika, Greece on 15 January 1917.
