An Evening with Simon Reid-Henry on the Empire of Democracy from 1970-2017

On Wednesday 27 November, author, academic, and Jesus Alumnus, , came to the Intellectual Forum to talk about his latest publication . 

Simon delivered a brief overview of his book which took us through the story of democracy in our time, from 1970-2017. Dr Julian Huppert, Director of the Intellectual Forum, then engaged him in a Q&A style conversation and Simon fielded a number of questions from the audience, including his predictions about the future of democracy. 

After the event, Simon said: "Being back at Jesus was a blast: the best parts stay the same and the rest moves on. It was a real pleasure sharing my recent work on the history of democracy with such an engaged and thoughtful audience."

Simon has held visiting positions in History at in New York, at in Sydney, at the and as Senior Researcher at the Oslo. Simon is co-convenor of  and Director of the  at . His writing can be found in The Guardian, New Statesman, The Economist, The Times, The Independent on Sunday, and the London Review of Books. He has appeared on radio and television and has presented to government agencies in the UK and abroad. Recently, he has been contributing to the UK Labour task force on international development and developing a European-wide network examining the transformation of popular sovereignty.
