Casting Letters: Art, Books and Chance

Casting Letters exhibited the work of fifteen artists engaging with the great 19th century experimental poem ‘A Roll of the Dice Never Will Abolish Chance’ in Easter Term 2022.

‘A Roll of the Dice Never Will Abolish Chance’ is a poem by Stéphane Mallarmé which celebrated its 125th anniversary in May 2022, when the show opened. In a wide range of media – print, sculpture and installation, film, the fifteen artists engaged with the nature of writing, visible language, and enduring afterlife of this great experimental work.

The exhibition and screenings include works by Jérémie Bennequin, Isabella Checcaglini and Mohammed Bennis, Robert Filliou, Ernest Fraenkel, Rodney Graham, ‘Estelle J.’, Michel Lorand, André Masson, Reinhold Nasshan, Michalis Pichler, Man Ray, Mitsou Ronat & Tibor Papp, and Honorine Tepfer. Works are drawn from the Books on Books Collection, an exceptional contemporary collection of artists’ books and important future gift to the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
